Origin of lace materials

Based on the origin of the lace, we have three popular types of lace in the market, namely: French lace, Korean lace, and Swiss lace.

French lace

French lace is thick, durable, and detectable. If you use your lace wig or lace hairpiece frequently like on a daily basis, French lace will be a good choice since it can endure the roughness from the application and removal process. However, the minus point of this kind of lace is it detectable and unbreathable, which is not a smart option for summer days.

Swiss lace

Swiss lace is thinner and finer than French lace. Thanks to its invisibility, Swiss lace can blend better with your skin tone and can be used at the front of the hairline or the entire base of a wig to create a natural look. Swiss lace is more breathable, but it is not as durable as French lace. Therefore, it’s better to start with French lace than Swiss lace if you are new to wigs and hair extensions.

Korean lace

The last one is Korean lace which comes from South Korea. Compared to the above two hair lace types, Korean lace is less popular, and there are even many wig wearers who have never heard of this type of lace. The strong point of Korean lace is it can hold denser and longer hair. Yet, just like French lace, Korean lace is detectable, and due to its thickness, it is unbreathable, either. That’s why Korean lace suits cool days better.

Color of the lace

When it comes to the color of the lace, we can divide lace into two categories: regular lace and HD lace.

Regular lace colors

Regular lace includes light brown color, medium brown color, dark brown color, and transparent color. Based on your skin tone, you can select an appropriate lace color to have a seamless and natural look. However, these certain lace colors seem not to fit any skin tone. There are many wearers who cannot find the exact lace color for their skin tone, so they need to bleach the knots or apply lace tint over the lace for a better blending.

To choose the most suitable lace color, you need to know your scalp complexion first. Don’t mistake it with your skin tone since you will apply the lace directly to your scalp. You can part your hair and look at your scalp to see which tone it is. After that, let check the following guideline:

  • For white, off-white, and cream scalp tones: transparent lace
  • For light brown scalp tones: light brown lace
  • For light beige or beige scalp tones: medium brown lace
  • For dark brown scalp tones: dark brown lace

HD lace

Among these above 4 regular hair lace types, transparent lace is the most popular one (especially among those with light skin tones) since it is less visible than the others. Yet, you may still see the white undertone even after applying a layer of makeup. Seeing this problem, hair companies have continuously researched to improve the lace material. And HD lace has come into the market after all.

HD stands for high definition, which indicates the finest lace material. It’s soft, thin, durable, breathable, and truly invisible. HD lace can secure you the most natural look with a see-through hairline. And thanks to its perfect characteristics, HD lace has now a favorite choice of many celebrities and wig lovers.

Which hair lace types should we choose?

We can see that HD lace is more invisible and comfortable than the other hair lace types. At the same time, however, it’s more fragile. Therefore, we suggest you use French lace or Korean lace if it’s your first time using a wig. Without experience, you may risk damaging the wig cap during the application and removal process. So, HD lace and Swiss lace will be more suitable after you use wigs for a certain time.

Regarding the price, French lace and regular laces are more affordable than Swiss lace and HD lace. Hence, you should consider your budget before deciding which one to buy.
